Hanami

2023 | glass | pâte de verre, cutting, polishing | 5×15×15cm

Hanami is one of the works I created during my doctoral studies at Tokyo University of the Arts. It marks a moment when I first began to form the concept of a work not before, but through the very act of making. What initially captivated me was a small test piece combining pink and blue glass. From this experiment, both the form and the concept gradually took shape.

The series is inspired by the Japanese spring tradition of hanami – the custom of gathering under blooming cherry trees. Looking up through branches heavy with pink blossoms into the pale blue sky left me with a vivid impression I longed to share with my family back in the Czech Republic, who had never experienced it. The work reflects both the radiance of those colors and my desire to communicate feelings that even my native language could not fully express.
