Beverage Set

2017 | crystal and alabaster glass, organza | mold–blowing, cutting, polishing, gluing | 27×10×10cm (carafe), 9×10×10cm (cups)

Beverage Set was created as my bachelor’s project at the Academy of Arts, Architecture and Design in Prague and is based on the concept of ostranenie – defamiliarization, as described by Viktor Shklovsky.
The aim was to make the familiar unfamiliar, so that ordinary objects could be perceived as if for the first time. The set consists of glasses and a carafe composed of two contrasting parts: a thin, transparent upper section and a solid, opaque alabaster-white base. From a distance they appear filled with milk, but closer inspection reveals that the whiteness comes from glass itself – a deliberate illusion. The installation was inspired by the Japanese wrapping technique furoshiki, with semi-transparent cloths concealing the pieces, inviting viewers to gradually uncover their shapes. By disrupting habitual perception, the work encourages a renewed sensitivity to the objects and the world around us.
